ERTMS and Railway Signalling

Expertise across trackside and onboard signalling systems
Whether it’s vehicles or infrastructure, long-distance rail or urban public transport, from procurement to operation, we have the expertise for your signalling project.

Expertise for the transition to modern railway signalling

The transition to ERTMS is modernising railway signalling and traffic management across Europe. We bring together Finnish and Swedish railway expertise to support infrastructure owners, operators, rolling stock owners and suppliers as they develop, implement and introduce new signalling systems.

Our experts work across both trackside and onboard ERTMS. In Sweden, our specialists have contributed to ERTMS development and implementation projects in project leadership and specialist roles, working with infrastructure as well as rolling stock modernisation. In Finland, our experts are involved in the Digirail programme, which is modernising train control, signalling and traffic management.

This cross-border experience allows us to bring together practical knowledge from different stages of ERTMS development and deployment across the Nordic railway sector.

Expertise across railway signalling

We support signalling projects from requirements and procurement through technical development and integration to testing, commissioning and approval. Our expertise covers both infrastructure and rolling stock systems, helping you manage the technical and organisational requirements involved in introducing and developing signalling technology.

Our expertise includes

ETCS expertise and vehicle adaptation

ERTMS and railway signalling

Integration with existing signalling systems and ERTMS

ERTMS standards and standardisation expertise

Project and technical project management

Rolling stock system procurement and installation

Testing and commissioning

Rolling stock approval and documentation

Expertise across the signalling system lifecycle

Our railway signalling expertise extends across the lifecycle of both trackside and onboard systems. We can support you from early strategy and studies through procurement, implementation and commissioning to approval, maintenance and ongoing system management.

Our specialists work across signalling technologies including ERTMS, ATC, CBTC and ATO/UTO, with experience from mainline rail as well as metro, tram and other urban transit systems.

We help you develop signalling strategies and carry out studies to support future investments in trackside and onboard systems, including ERTMS, CBTC and driverless systems such as ATO/UTO

We support procurement and requirements definition for trackside and onboard signalling systems, helping establish the technical, capacity and safety requirements for the system.

Our specialists work as system integrators and provide technical project management and project teams for signalling implementation. Our expertise covers ERTMS, ATC, CBTC, ATO/UTO and other public transport signalling systems.

We support testing and commissioning of both trackside and onboard systems. Our experience includes introducing new signalling technology into existing operational environments, including brownfield projects where implementation needs to take place while the existing system remains in operation.

We support the approval process, including vehicle approvals required before rolling stock equipped with new signalling systems can enter service.

Once a signalling system is in operation, we provide expertise for the management and maintenance of its hardware and software, as well as troubleshooting and product support.

Signalling expertise for urban transit

Our signalling expertise also covers rail-based urban public transport. Our specialists have worked with metro, tram and local rail systems in Stockholm, Helsinki, Gothenburg, Uppsala, Tampere and Oslo.

We work with signalling systems both trackside and onboard, bringing together specialists in areas including system integration, technical project management, safety, rolling stock, EMC and electrical power.

Welado is conducting type testing on the new Krösatåget

Welado’s David Gustavsson reports on the tests being carried out on the new Krösatågen trains in Beasain, Spain. David has been part of Krösatågen’s project for new rolling stock since 2018, from drawing up specifications for signalling and vehicle communication, through the selection of a supplier and the award of the contract, right up to the present, when the trains are currently being built. The rolling stock is being built at the CAF factory in Beasain in northern Spain, and as part of this process, functional tests – known as type tests – are being carried out, with David playing a key role. In short, the tests aim to verify that the rolling stock has been built to specification and is functioning as intended. The tests are carried out on stationary vehicles in the workshop, so there is a great deal of testing of software logic and train functions. In recent days, David and the team have, amongst other things, been testing safety features such as fire alarms and how the vehicle’s various subsystems react to them.

Welado is part of the ERTMS roll-out in Sweden

Magnus Platemar of Welado is the technical coordinator for the Swedish Transport Administration’s ERTMS programme. This involves ensuring that suppliers’ systems undergo quality assurance, are then tested on the test track, and are subsequently put into operation on pilot sections as part of the national ERTMS roll-out.
